Join our revamped Equality Action Group in the crucial role of Delivery Coordinator as we shape an inclusive community across student sport.

Are you passionate about equality? Driven to break down barriers? Join us in shaping a sporting community where everyone belongs.

The Scottish Student Sport Equality Action Group are recruiting for new members to create tangible, real world change across the sporting sector. Over the past 12 months, alongside developing our new action plan we’ve been reshaping our advisory and delivery structure to support us in achieving our aims in this space. That includes a new Delivery Coordinator role developed as part of our ongoing engagement with the Moving to Inclusion Framework.

Working across four priority areas (below) the Equality Action Group is led by our Chair and an elected member responsible for guiding our wider Belonging based work on the SSS Development Committee. The four priority areas reflect significant barriers to participation and engagement across the student sport network. Our work more broadly seeks to address barriers faced by all, the decision to focus on these four areas allows us to deliver actionable change we believe will have a lasting impact across the sector.

  1. LGBTQ+
  2. Women and Girls
  3. Disability
  4. Ethnicity

Each area above has an Equality Lead who has a more strategic responsibility for their respective area. Delivery Coordinators will work closely with their Equality Lead, exploring how to translate priorities into activity and outcomes.

These roles would be ideal for those with lived experiences, drive to make a difference and a can-do attitude. The role may appeal to students or staff who have been involved in local equality work and want to make a change at the national level. For any questions about this role please contact our Head of Development, Jordan Dawson by email.

By joining the team, you’ll play a vital part in ensuring that equality isn’t just a policy but a practice that runs through everything we do.

View the role descriptor here. Please note that multiple roles under this title are available.

Applications to this role will be open ended. To apply please email Jordan with a recent copy of your CV and no more than 150 words explaining why equality is important to you.

About to begin your studies in Scotland? Find out how you can get involved in student sport at your new university or college

Uni of Aberdeen hockey students crowded round a phone taking a photo at Conference Final 2024

Just had your place confirmed to study at a Scottish university or college this September? Congratulations!

Beginning your studies already brings lots of challenges and opportunities, but there’s one area we hope you consider when you rock up to campus next month: sport.

We’re on a mission to ensure every student in Scotland can be active, so read on below to find out how you can participate in physical activity as a student this year.

Who are Scottish Student Sport (SSS)?

We’re glad you asked! SSS are the governing body for student sport in Scotland. We run sports events, provide development opportunities, and generally advocate for the amazing world of student sport on behalf of our members. Currently, 30 universities and colleges across Scotland are SSS members, ensuring they can access the resources we offer.

Similar to us are BUCS who run student sport across the UK, including a number of fixtures and competitions that involve Scottish institutions. The work we do is in close collaboration with BUCS, and we ensure Scottish interests are represented on a national scale.

Now you know the difference, let’s look at how you can get active as a student.

Step 1: What’s on offer?

The provision of sport at your institution will vary depending on where you’re heading. Some will have on-campus facilities like a gym, pitches and sports halls for you to utilise, while others may rely on partnerships to ensure you can stay active. Similarly, the number of sports clubs offered will differ so it’s worth doing some early research to know what to expect.

Head to your institution’s website and have a look at what’s on offer under sport and recreation. Check out the list of clubs and sports, and contact any clubs you may be interested in joining. Feeling inspired after watching the Olympics? This is your chance to try that new sport for the first time!

Going to college this year? 18 Scottish colleges now have an Active Campus Coordinator who support with providing sporting opportunities. Keep an eye out for them when you begin your studies, or meet them here.

Step 2: Have a taste

Once Welcome Week rolls around, you’ll find that most sports clubs will offer taster sessions for you to try before committing to the club. These cater for everyone beginner to advanced, and mean you can meet your potential new teammates in a fun and relaxed environment.

Also make sure to visit the institution’s sports facilities. Many will offer free access for new students during Welcome Week, or may have offers available if you’re ready to sign up.

Step 3: Get involved (on and off the pitch)

You’ve found your new favourite sport or activity option. What now?

As we said, SSS offer much more than just competitive opportunities for Scottish students. Our amazing Development team are here to support aspiring match officials, coaches, volunteers and sports leaders.

However you want to be involved in sport, we’re here to help. Just head to our directory and reach out to the relevant staff member.

P.S. keep an eye out for our popular Coach Like a Girl programme – more news coming soon!

The SSS Network is a vibrant community of sports lovers and offers so many ways for students and staff to get involved, no matter your interests.

It’s the start of the next academic year and we have a new strategy to unveil! Find out how we’ll be enhancing the student sporting experience

Scottish Student Sport has set off on a refreshed strategic journey as we gear up for the 2025/26 academic year.

Entitled Inspiring, Active, Learning, our new strategy came into effect on 1st August 2025 and will guide our direction over the next two years, through to summer 2027.

At its core, our mission remains unchanged: to empower colleges and universities to enhance their sport and active wellbeing opportunities for students.

This strategy launches at time when SSS have undergone significant organisational change, against a backdrop of public funding cuts and the ongoing cost of living pressures. This has required a rethinking of how particular areas of work can be delivered over the coming years. However, the strategy also sets out a path to look at 2027 and beyond, where we can continue to elevate the student experience for those participating in sport on campus.

We’ve also worked to align our goals with the Scottish Government’s new Physical Activity for Health Framework, launched in October 2024. Together, the network is committed to playing an active role in delivering national outcomes across sport, health, and education. By placing ourselves at the junctions between tertiary education and partners across the Scottish sporting system, we will continue to support, connect and advocate for our members.

Sport and active wellbeing are fundamental parts of the student experience—and just as higher education helps shape the future of sport in Scotland, sport enriches life on campus. SSS is committed to leading visibly and collaboratively, helping to bring these worlds even closer together.

Finally, our Development Committee will be led again by Katherine Duncan (Edinburgh). Xsara Murray (Edinburgh College) and Callum Ball (Stirling) were both elected for the first time to the new-look committee.

Scottish Student Sport can reveal the latest changes to our operational structures building into the 25/26 academic year.

Updated 30/07/25

With season 25/26 approaching, we can confirm more details about our new phase of work, and the changes this brings to Scottish Student Sport.

The changes are the result of a challenging financial climate, created by rising core costs and the removal of £100k of annual external funding. Previously, we have confirmed that the SSS staff team will from August 1st drop from ten to six with the following roles discontinued:

  • Competitions Assistant
  • Sport & Active Health Coordinator
  • Inclusion & Culture Coordinator
  • Learning & People Coordinator

Looking Forward

A slimmed down staff team means that changes to our ways of working are required. As an overview, we can now provide a streamlined ‘roles and responsibilities’ graphic which outlines the areas of of work, partners, and Sports Groups each staff member will look after.

In Competitions, we’re aiming to deliver around 100 events alongside the usual league activity, and what we expect to be a slimmed down National Squad programme. The full run of events for 25/26 will be confirmed by September.

Our SSS Leagues, Knockouts, and BUCS Centralised Leagues will all return in 25/26 with information on entries communicated to the relevant institution staff. We will be leaning more on volunteers to help support the delivery of these events throughout the year.

Any SSS/BUCS Centralised League, or National Squad queries should now be directed to Head of Competitions Chris Purdie.

We will be evolving our Development approach to provide broader, more flexible support across the sector focusing on our membership, our partners and key areas of work. By prioritising breadth, impact, and added value, we aim to engage more members and partners through networking opportunities and collaborative project work.

We will be looking to continue our workforce development efforts including a revised Reffin’ Brilliant programme and flexible staff education to fill knowledge gaps. Our focus on a wider exploration of how physical activity for wellbeing can be embedded further across tertiary education will allow us to continue our work with SAMH and integrate movement into the everyday student life.

Similarly, our Equality Action Plan will aim to enhance belonging across a diverse community to ensure no student is left behind in their desire to play sport or be active. We’ll be enabled in all of this by harvesting research, insights and data analysis from a range of areas to better inform the membership, our partners and the broader network about the important role of sport/physical activity.

Our Advocacy work will continue apace, with SSS staff responsibilities being supplanted by members representing SSS in a variety of networks connected to sport and education. Collectively we will continue to position sport and physical activity within tertiary education and vice-versa, ensuring that joined up thinking and collaboration is made as easy as possible on a national level.

We will prioritise our partnerships with sportscotland and BUCS, aim to stay connected to SFC to identify future possibilities for refreshed support, and aim to contribute to strategic decision making about sport at a local, regional and national level. We will also be working hard to influence sustainable longer term to the Active Campus network in partnership with College senior management and Colleges Scotland.

Sports Groups

As part of the rethinking of our areas of work, a review of our 35 sports was also undertaken with the decision made to reduce the number we operate in. This decision was made based on member/SGB engagement, available volunteer support, and our current involvement in each sport.

The groups we will no longer be continuing are:

  • Boxing
  • Cheer
  • Climbing
  • Karate
  • Lacrosse
  • Ultimate

In addition, Cross Country will move to sit within Athletics, reflecting the SGB structure and make-up of the majority of student clubs.

Each Sport Group is overseen by a SSS staff member who acts as the Sport Lead. Following a reallocation, sports will now sit with the following staff:

  • Stew Fowlie: Basketball, Curling, Rowing, Shinty
  • Chris Purdie: Golf, Football, Futsal, Judo, Volleyball
  • Jordan Dawson: Cricket, Fencing, Hockey, Netball, Swimming
  • Julia Stenhouse: Archery, Badminton, Rifle, Sailing, Table Tennis
  • Sophie Charlton: Athletics/XC, Handball, Polo, Tennis, Trampoline
  • Ruairidh Campbell: Cycling, Rugby, Squash, Triathlon

Recruitment continues for most of our sports. With the operational changes in play, we are more reliant than ever on volunteers to step up and support our sports this season. View the vacancies available here.

Further Updates

Once our new committees are in place following our AGM, we will be able to confirm the SSS Operational Plan for 25/26. This will fill in any final gaps relating to project delivery moving forward.

Should you wish to discuss any aspect in the meantime, please contact COO Stew Fowlie on stew@scottishstudentsport.com or call 07903 891 497.
