You might want to know…

  • Badminton can be played as both an individual and team sport. Throughout the academic year college and university students can enter teams into the BUCS mixed, women’s and men’s leagues.

  • If team events are not your thing, but you still want to compete, you can play in the BUCS National Championships in singles, doubles and mixed doubles against colleges and universities throughout the UK. Lucky individuals can then progress to playing in Europe and beyond in the European and World University Championships.

  • We also run the Scottish College and University Championships where students from across the country come together to compete in the two-day event covering singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The event is one of the most popular in the calendar year and is followed by a social ceilidh and night out.

    Ryan McCuaig

Ryan’s journey in sport started before University as he volunteered his time after school to coach and run badminton sessions for all the local schools in Mid Argyll (West Coast of Scotland).

Ryan studied Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. During his time at University, he developed the profile of the sport in his role as Publicity officer of the University’s Badminton Club. Ryan’s proudest moment was when the club won the Pavilion Association Cup for the best club publicity record of the year 2016/17, first award ever awarded to the Badminton Club for publicity. Ryan also enjoyed volunteering at local disability badminton club, an opportunity which led to other Edinburgh University students volunteering at the Scottish Disability Badminton Championship.

Ryan was also elected to the Edinburgh University Sports Union Executive Committee as the Publicity Officer and worked with various governing bodies in this role, therefore has a lot of experience and determination to develop the wider Badminton program on offer for all students in Scotland.
