Building Inclusive Cultures
Our work on equality has evolved.
For many years, much of our focus centred on equality, equity, diversity and inclusion. That work remains fundamental to everything we do, but our ambition has grown beyond ensuring students simply have access to opportunities.
Our aim is to create environments where every student feels that they truly belong.
Belonging recognises that participation alone is not enough. A student may join a club, attend a session or volunteer at an event, but still feel isolated, overlooked or unable to be themselves. True belonging exists when students feel welcomed, valued, respected and connected to the communities around them.
Equality remains the foundation of this work. By identifying and removing barriers, improving representation, challenging discrimination and creating more inclusive cultures, we aim to create the conditions in which belonging can flourish.
This shift also reflects the changing role of student sport. Student sport is no longer solely about competition or performance. It plays an increasingly important role in supporting wellbeing, building friendships, developing future leaders and creating communities where students can thrive throughout their time in education.
By placing belonging at the centre of our work, we recognise that creating positive sporting experiences requires more than inclusive policies or individual initiatives. It requires a collective commitment to creating environments where every student, regardless of their background, identity, ability or previous experience, feels they have a place.
