Fencing

Key Information

Fencing has been a part of the SSS sports programme since its formation in 2005.

Currently, 14 teams compete in the BUCS Fencing Centralised Leagues in the 2024/25 season across Scottish Men’s Tier 1 and Women’s Tier 1 respectively. Additionally, there are a few teams that compete in the Premier North leagues.

SS Fencing organises the SS Fencing Beginners Championships for fencers with less than two years’ experience each year and the SS Fencing Individual Championships is for fencers of any level of experience.

Scottish Fencing is the national governing body which oversees fencing in Scotland and fencers are required to have Scottish Fencing membership in order to compete at SS Fencing events. More information on this is available upon request.

Duncan Readle

Epee fencer Duncan has been in the sport for over 15 years. His student fencing journey started at the University of Dundee while studying Abertay, training alongside helping run the club.

While Duncan didn’t get to experience team fencing, student events were still a huge part of his time in higher education and he is glad to be able to help a new generation of fencers enjoy the same opportunities.

Why Volunteer?

“Fencing as a sport has been a huge positive force in my life and student fencing in particular has provided me with so many memories, friends and skills – I even met my partner at DUFC!

“Helping run the SSS Fencing program is a way for me to give back to a community I love, and hopefully ensure it remains thriving for many years to come.”
